Seven women cops promoted

NEW DELHI: Seven women inspectors of the Delhi police have been promoted to the post of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). This is the first time that more than half-a-dozen officers have been promoted to the post of ACP.

According to a Delhi police spokesperson, the promoted women Inspectors are Rita Bhasin, Sudesh Kumari, Praveen Giri, Neeta Malhotra, Salma Khan, Chandra Prabha and Nirmal Kaur.

A senior police officer said these officers were in line for promotion on the basis of their seniority. In the past couple of years only a couple of women inspectors were promoted to the post of ACP, while the number of male police inspectors awarded such promotions was around 40. The officer, however, clarified that it was not due to gender bias but the fact that women officers were low down the seniority list.

Murder case solved

NEW DELHI: A 23-year-old man has been arrested on charges of killing his brother at Nangloi in West Delhi on March 30. The accused had developed illicit relationship with his brother's wife.

The Police Control Room on March 30 morning received a call claiming that one Bhim Sen had been murdered in his house at Nangloi. His brother Rambir told the police that on March 2 he went to sleep on the terrace, while Bhim Sen and the third brother, Sewa Ram, were sleeping on the ground floor. He came downstairs the next morning and found Bhim Sen lying in a pool of blood. Sewa Ram was missing.

Enquiries revealed that Sewa Ram had illicit relationship with Bhim Sen's wife. A couple of days before he was murdered, Bhim Sen and Sewa Ram had a heated exchange on the issue. On April 5, the police mounted a raid at Sewa Ram's hideout and arrested him. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to having murdered his brother. At his instance, the police recovered the knife he had used to kill Bhim Sen.
