Army XI routs Indian Airlines

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Defending champion Army XI proved a point on Friday by handing out an ignominious 4-0 defeat to fancied Indian Airlines and top the Group `A' quarterfinal league of the Indian Oil 111th all-India Beighton Cup hockey tournament here on Friday.

E. Ekka (34th minute), Rajesh Lakra (43rd), Cyprin Aind (46th) and Anil Ekka (67th) were the scorers.

Army will take on Group `B' runner-up Punjab & Sind Bank in Sunday's semifinal. The other semifinal will see last year's runner-up and Group `B' topper Border Security Force, Jalandhar, take on Indian Airlines, Delhi.

In an inconsequential match, Karnataka crushed CC&FC 5-1 to take the third spot.

BSF too topped Group `B' despite being held 2-2 by Punjab Police in the final league match of the group.

In a mediocre encounter, BSF was 2-0 up thanks to a brace by Ranjit Singh (17th and 21st). Punjab Police managed to equalise twice in quick succession through Deepak Kumar in the 40th and 42nd minutes.
