Strike entered fifth day on Friday Thousands of cheques have not been cleared
A LONG WAIT: Pensioners and others waiting in front of the State Bank of India main branch in Belgaum on Friday in the hope of drawing money.
Belgaum: As the strike by State Bank of India (SBI) employees entered fifth day on Friday, the hardship faced by the business community and pensioners, among other customers, has increased, even as business transactions worth crores of rupees have been blocked. Thousands of cheques submitted by customers in various banks in the city running into crores of rupees are blocked. Sources in a major public sector bank in Maruti Galli told The Hindu here on Friday that its customers were now a harassed lot as their cheques worth more than Rs. 2.50 crore were pending for the last five days. The strike has badly affected the pensioners, who have been visiting SBI branches from far and near places to draw their pension money. A woman pensioner along with an attendant has been visiting a branch of the SBI almost every day from Kanbargi village near here. She has spent nearly Rs. 200 on travelling during these five days. There are hundreds of such pensioners who keep visiting the SBI branches in the hope of drawing some money. With the issue yet to be resolved, they will have to wait at least till Monday when the matter is likely to be sorted out with the Government, sources said.
