Poll outcome will decide cine career: Vijayakanth

Special Correspondent

Fan support decided his constituency

CUDDALORE: The outcome of the Assembly elections will determine his continuation in the film industry, said Vijayakanth, founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam.

Addressing a press conference at Vriddhachalam, about 70 km from here on Friday, Mr. Vijayakanth said he chose to contest from the Vriddhachalam constituency because of an overwhelming fan support in South Arcot district from the beginning of his film career.

The strong fan following had instilled in him the confidence that he could win from any of the 234 constituencies. When asked how could he be so sure when two formidable alliances led by the DMK and the AIADMK were in the fray, Mr. Vijayakanth said no one could fathom the minds of the electorate, and that, moreover, his fans could not be bought over.

On the image of the candidates he had chosen to field, Mr. Vijayakanth said of the 234 candidates 100 were educated: of them 50 had completed Plus Two and 50 were experienced enough. Though initially he proposed to induct 50-60 women candidates, he could field only about 20-22. However, next time he would increase their numbers.

On whether he still holds the president's post of the South India Cine Actors' Association, Mr. Vijayakanth said his tenure would end by June 2006. When asked whether any film actors would join his campaign, he said it was for the actors to decide, he would not compel anyone to do so, but would welcome it if any actor came forward.

When pointed out that Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa was referring to the DMK as her only rival, Mr. Vijayakanth said for her there was only one opponent, whereas for him there were two opponents — the AIADMK and the DMK.
