Central Government staff drafted for poll duty

To be deployed in Mahe and Yanam

Pondicherry: District Collector cum District Election Officer of Pondicherry G Theva Needhi Dhas said here on Thursday that as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India the Elections Department of Pondicherry would deploy Central Government employees from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh to function as Presiding and Polling Officers in Mahe and Yanam regions respectively. He told newsmen that while 167 staff working in Kerala would be deployed in Mahe (having two Assembly constituencies), 101 central employees working in Andhra Pradesh would be assigned duty in the Yanam region.

The Returning Officers for these regions would train them. However the group D staff in these regions of the Pondicherry Government would be utilised to assist these officers. Generally, fifty per cent of the total staff required for poll related duties in the polling stations to function as Presiding and Polling officers would be from among Central staff in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions. Mr. Dhas said that auxiliary booths would be set up where there were more than 1,400 voters in a polling station.

Joint Chief Electoral Officer P T Rudra Goud said that a couple of constituencies would be selected on the basis of intensity of number of blind voters to introduce special facilities to enable the visually impaired voters to exercise their franchise on the basis of Braille system of reading.

The District Election officer said that Pondicherry had established a record of cent percent coverage of voters under Electors Photo Identity Cards system. Hence voters should bring their EPICs with them while exercising franchise at the booths.
