MAHABUBNAGAR: A case of alleged cheating, forgery and swindling of money to the tune of Rs 20 lakhs by a cashier of a bank came to light on Friday when the manager of the bank lodged a complaint with the police. According to information reaching here, the cashier of the Kodangal branch of Sangameshwara Grameena Bank, B.Shivaraj, forged a cheque issued by the bank and allegedly swindled Rs 20 lakhs by drawing the amount from the State Bank of Hyderabad, Kodangal branch. Manager of the Kodagal branch of SGB Basanth Reddy handed over a cheque for Rs 3 lakhs to his cashier, Shivaraj, on April 4 to draw the amount from the SBH, Kodangal, for the purpose of daily transactions. Shivaraj forged the amount to Rs 23 lakhs in the cheque and drew the amount from SBH. He handed over Rs.3 lakhs from it to the bank manager and kept the remaining amount with him. As the audit of the bank was scheduled within two days on April 6, the SGB manager asked the cashier to enter the drawn amount in the passbook by the SBH branch. When the cashier hesitated to do this, the manager smelt something fishy.
Vanishing act
He sent the bank accountant Suresh along with the cashier to the SBH for the entry of the drawn cash in the passbook. The cashier who accompanied the accountant up to the gate of the SBH Kodangal branch disappeared when the latter entered the bank. On checking the bank records, the fact came to light. On knowing this, the Sanagameshwara Grameena Bank general manager Kutumba Rao, and area manager Kamalakar Rao brought the matter to the notice of the police. The SGB Kodangal branch manager Basanth Reddy lodged a complaint to this effect at Kodangal police station. The CI of police Mallaiah said that a case of cheating and forgery was registered.
