Pro-dam group to stage dharna

Special Correspondent

To submit memorandum to Prime Minister

AHMEDABAD: Narmada Abhiyan, a non-political organisation that supports the Narmada dam construction, will organise a dharna at the Sabarmati Ashram on Monday to counter the Narmada Bachao Andolan's agitation in Delhi against the dam.

Abhiyan convener Digant Oza said 1,500 people from different walks of life would participate in the dharna.

The Abhiyan may launch a dharna in Delhi later to communicate the pro-dam forces' views and the project's benefits.

It has sought an appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to submit a memorandum. Mr. Oza said the Abhiyan was also for rehabilitation of the displaced people.

Despite giving a written assurance to the Supreme Court that she would not oppose the dam construction, Ms. Patkar had gone back on her word, he added.

Gujarat Pradesh Congress president Bharat Solanki blamed Chief Minister Narendra Modi for the delay in project implementation.

Despite having his own party colleague Shivraj Singh Chauhan as Chief Minister in Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Modi had failed to sort out the rehabilitation disputes.
