MANGALORE: The Mangalore South (Pandeshwar) police, who busted an inter-State gang of vehicle thieves, have arrested one more accused in this connection on Thursday and recovered six vehicles from him. The police had arrested four others in this connection. They have now recovered 10 stolen vehicles estimated at Rs. 50 lakh from the five accused. Superintendent of Police B. Dayananda said here on Friday in a statement that the police team arrested Ali Ahmad, alias Muhammad Ali (28), resident of Kapikad-Haleyangadi in Mangalore taluk near Suratkal, following a tip off. The accused was on his way to Goa. He said Ali Ahmad is part of a major inter-State vehicle theft gang. Mr. Dayananda said the accused used to obtain registration certificates of vehicles involved in accidents and rendered beyond repair, forge the details of the stolen vehicles, including the engine and chassis number, and other details on the Certificate of Registration book and sell the vehicles. Mr. Dayananda said the police had arrested Hakeem, Mustafa, Abdul Hakeem, Sakaria in this connection. Ali Ahmad was produced before the jurisdictional court and has been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
