CHENNAI: At a three-hour cancer awareness programme held for women living in the slums here on Friday, cancer survivors shared their experience and explained to the women the need to examine themselves. The programme, held at the German Hall in T. Neeraja Malik, who runs the cancer support group at Apollo Speciality Hospital and Sahaayika, a non-governmental organisation that raises funds to treat poor women and children suffering from cancer, spoke. Ms. Malik, who was diagnosed twice with breast cancer, once in 1998 and again in 2004, said she had had two surgeries and several sessions of chemotherapy and continued to lead a full life. Sahaayika uses the funds to treat children, particularly girl children. Meenakshi Rajan, formerly from Cancer Institute, spoke on the seven possible signs of cancer and proposed to hold one-hour classes for 30 women. K.R.
