Expert says that countries with lower GDP are doing better

  • One nuclear bomb can pay for universalisation of Integrated Child Development Services
  • If all children get their rights, power balances would change

HYDERABAD: Countries with lower Gross Domestic Product are doing better than India in respect of nutrition of children, said Director of State Health Resource Centre, Chattisgarh T. Sundararaman at a three-day convention on Children's Right to Food organised here on Friday.

The convention discussed child nutrition or the lack thereof, the role of anganwadi workers and mid-day meals among other issues. Economist Jayathi Ghosh pointed out how one nuclear bomb would pay for four budgets for the universalisation of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS).

Mr. Sundararaman discussed issues with regard to malnutrition like constraints on the mother's time to take care of the child's nutrient requirements, recurrent illnesses and anaemia which can decrease the ability to absorb food, lack of adequate nutrition after recovery from an illness, maternal care during pregnancy, the space between the delivery of one child and another.Child rights activist Shanta Sinha said that the enlightened elite had to be roped in as part of this campaign.
