VIJAYAWADA: So breathtaking is the view of the moving mass of excavators and workers busy shifting mounds of earth from canal bed to bunds that passersby would stop for a while to have a feel of the massive `Jalayagnam' programme. When the canal as wide as 79 metres is being dug with the help of men and machines, the scene naturally stirs curiosity among the onlookers.

A drive down the Gannavaram-Nuzvid road makes you stop on seeing the awe-inspiring works related to the Indira Sagar Right Main Canal (ISRMC) near Gollanapalli village.

Once finished, the canal will link Godavari and Krishna rivers and the work is going on in full swing. Hectic activity is witnessed these days on the Gannavaram-Nuzvid road. Excavators, bulldozers, tippers and tractors are working at a brisk pace to form a massive canal.

The ISRMC enters Krishna district at Palleramudi village in Nuzvid mandal, and joins Budameru rivulet upstream Velagaleru Regulator. The natural course of Budameru rivulet and Budameru Diversion Channel will link the ISRMC and Krishna River.

The cost of excavating the 54-km canal in Krishna district is an estimated Rs. 653.55 crores. It will benefit 58 villages in Bapulapadu, Nuzvid, Gannavaram, Agiripalli, Vijayawada Rural and Vijayawada Urban mandals by creating an additional ayacut of 43,500 acres.

The work has been divided into three packages for administrative convenience and all of them commenced. The work should be completed by February 2007 as per schedule. The canal is designed to divert 80 tmc feet of Godavari water to the Krishna River upstream the Prakasam Barrage to stabilise its 13.5 lakh-acre ayacut spread over parts of Krishna, Guntur, West Godavari and Prakasam districts.

Over 2,000 acres of various kinds of land are to be acquired for the project. While all the 250 acres of Government land has already been assigned, only a fourth of the 1,800 acres of private land needed has been acquisitioned so far. Another 120 acres of forest land is needed for assignment to the project.
