  • Health official asks people not to store water in open containers

Bangalore: A confirmed case of chikungunya has been reported in Bangalore, officials in the Health Department have said.

One case of the viral disease, which is caused by an alpha virus spread by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, has been reported in Nelamangala on the outskirts of Bangalore.

"A few people with symptoms of chikungunya were admitted to the Epidemic Diseases Hospital. We have sent their blood samples for examination to the National Institute of Virology at Victoria Hospital here. But chikungunya is a mild form of viral infection and needs no admission," M.G. Prasad, Director, Health and Family Welfare Services, said.

Health Department officials said there is no cause to panic as there is no epidemic situation in Bangalore as far as chikungunya is concerned.

He advised people not to store water in containers for many days as the Aedes mosquito breeds in clean water.
