Lodhi Gardens turns 70

NEW DELHI: The Capital's most popular patch of green -- Lodhi Gardens -- is turning 70 this Sunday. And celebrating the birthday in grand style are its most regular walkers, heritage lovers and members of the Green Circle, a voluntary group of professionals out to "`protect" the garden.

A historic park in the middle of the city, Lodhi Gardens has elements from the Lodhi period, Mughal period as well as more modern landmarks like J. A. Stein's glass-house. There are also British elements in the gardens that make it an important heritage precinct. And now for the lucky few that get to see it constantly, it is time to return a favour.

Sunday will be a special day at the Lodhi Gardens as different stakeholders involved in the park, citizens as well as New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) employees, come together. A big celebration has been planned for the day. Kicking off early in the morning, prominent walkers of the garden will do more than just take their regular stroll. They will participate in planting of neem saplings. There will also be an adopt-a-tree campaign so that citizens in the area can do their bit for their green.
