BANGALORE: It was perhaps for the first time that the members of the judiciary took to the streets, literally. They rubbed shoulders with sportsmen, advocates, politicians and presspersons — all for a cause.

The programme , which was flagged off from the main portico of the High Court building, passed through Mahatma Gandhi Road and Cubbon Road before ending on the High Court premises.

Billed as a "run for justice", the event drew over 2,000 people, including scores of tiny-tots and schoolchildren.

If Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph and several judges represented the judiciary, Commissioner of Police Ajai Kumar Singh represented the police, former India wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani represented sports personalities and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Basavaraj Horatti, the Government.

Organised by the High Court as part of its golden jubilee celebrations, "Justice for all, real and speedy" was the slogan for the programme. The run started at 7.30 a.m. with the Chief Justice and the judges joining the large gathering.

All the participants were welcomed with a T-shirt and after the event they were given a certificate and treated to breakfast and tea.

The Chief Justice said the participation of representatives from the legislature, the executive and the judiciary in the event signified that all the three organs of the State were working for a common cause. "We want to send this message that all the three of us are not working at crossroads and that we have respect for one another. We wanted to show that we can achieve what the Constitution has conceived — a harmonious relationship among all the three wings," he said.

Mr. Joseph hoped that the run would herald a new era for the judiciary and enthuse the members of the Bar and the Bench to participate cohesively in the justice delivery system.

Mr. Horatti said he was proud to participate in the run.
