States shifting to other banks

Uttar Pradesh unable to pay salaries

NEW DELHI: Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra are taking steps to nullify the adverse effects of the strike by the State Bank of India, which entered the sixth day on Saturday.

The Gujarat Government has decided to shift all its financial transactions to Bank of Baroda (BoB). The Government will conduct all financial transactions through 19 branches of BoB in 18 district headquarters of the State.

The State Government has also authorised BoB, State Bank of Saurashtra, Dena Bank, Corporation Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, UTI bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and IDBI Bank to collect sales tax receipts.

In Maharashtra, the Reserve Bank of India has in principle allowed the State Government to shift its treasury account, a senior State Government official said.

``We had approached the RBI seeking its approval to shift the account and the apex bank has agreed, in principle, to the proposal,'' Additional Chief Secretary (Finance), O.P. Gehrotra said.

Bihar ties up with 3 banks

The Bihar Government today tied up with Canara Bank, Central Bank of India and Bank of India through the Reserve Bank of India for its day-to-day transactions. Additional Finance Commissioner (Resources) Shashi Shekhar Sharma said the decision to allow the transactions on behalf of the government through these banks, for a temporary period, was taken after a meeting he had with the RBI officials.

The Uttar Pradesh Government has temporarily shifted its transactions to Allahabad Bank. The move comes in the wake of the State's inability to pay salaries to its employees. — PTI
