Vayalar Ravi : LDF should expel Janata Dal(S)

Accuses LDF and CPI (M) leadership of political opportunism

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi on Saturday demanded that the LDF leadership should expel the Janata Dal (S) for its BJP connection in Karnataka.

Accusing the LDF and the CPI (M) leadership of political opportunism and communal appeasement, Mr. Ravi pointed out that Janata Dal (S) president Deve Gowda had not taken any action against his Son, Kumaraswami, for having forged an alliance with the BJP. He wanted to know the logic behind the CPI (M) and the LDF continuing its association with the Janata Dal (S) in the State contrary to their strong positions against the BJP.

The LDF was courting the Indian National League, the People's Democratic Party and the Jamat-e-Islami because it was convinced that winning the Assembly elections would not be an easy affair.

Mr. Ravi said that the arrival of the CPI (M) Polit Bureau member V. S. Achuthanandan would not change the electoral scene. The only good thing he perceived was that Mr. Achuthanandan had succeeded in bringing the Polit Bureau to its knees over his candidature and make it accept that factionalism was a reality in the party.

He said the CPI (M) had yet again proved that it would pull all cards, including communal appeasement, to capture power. He wanted to know whether the CPI(M) had the guts to reject the support of the PDP, INL and the Jamat-e-islami. He claimed that it was the UDF that moved the resolution in the Assembly in favour of PDP chairman Abdul Nasir Maudany. Mr. Ravi accused the CPI (M) of practising double standards. It had got its coalition partners to drop from the fray their candidates, Neelalohithadasan Nadar and Antony Raju, both accused in various cases. However, it did not have any qualms in giving ticket to a person who had been tainted in the liquor scam, he said.
