ELURU: District Congress Committee (DCC) President Indukuri Ramakrishna Raju on Saturday commented that the `trend of official activism' in West Godavari district in certain sensitive issues like Kolleru was not a healthy sign for the government. "There is a feeling among fishermen in Kolleru that the officials have been riding roughshod over them in the name of enforcing the court directives," he said at a press conference here on Saturday. He called for a greater coordination between the district administration and the elected representatives of the ruling Congress for development of the district and effective implementation of welfare schemes initiated by the Congress-led State and Central governments.
Panchayat polls
Saying that the twin issues of Kolleru and Indira Sagar Project were likely to influence the upcoming Panchayat Raj elections, he highlighted the need for a cautious approach in handling these issues.
Mr. Raju said the DCC would embark upon the exercise of forging alliances with the like-minded parties locally. "As of now, the chances of alliance between the Congress and the CPI (M) appears to be bleak in view of the latter's `militant stand' vis-a-vis the problem of displacement caused by Indira Sagar Project and removal of encroachments in Kolleru.
Releasing a list of the new executive of the DCC at the media conference, the DCC chief claimed that 30 per cent of posts were allotted for women and a similar number for BCs. He expressed the hope that the executive would help win the panchayat elections.
