THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress Working Committee member Veerappa Moily on Saturday alleged that the various agitations launched by Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan against several development programmes of the UDF Government were directed at his own party leadership. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Moily said the roots of each of the agitations that Mr. Achuthanandan led, be it against the ADB loan taken by the Kerala Government, the industrial water supply scheme for Kochi, or Coca-Cola company could be traced to the schism in the CPI (M). He alleged that there was a vertical split in the CPI (M). He said the UDF would approach the electorate with a positive agenda for development and social justice, while the LDF had a negative approach that was not forward looking. He said the Congress had clearly conveyed the message to its workers to work for unity and solidarity of the Congress and the UDF, including the Democratic Indira Congress(Karunakaran). Mr. Moily said the Government formula for implementing the Narendran Commission recommendation on backward class reservation was a social document. He said Kerala could not afford to lag behind in development, especially when national policies were being reshaped for economic growth. Congress Chief Ministers in Haryana, Maharashtra, Punjab and Delhi had transformed their respective States into major destination points. The CPI (M)'s negative approach would never make the State vibrant. In reply to a question, Mr Moily said the relations between the Congress and the DIC(K) was working out smoothly after the initial pangs. The differences were settled in the shortest possible time. He did not want to open a debate on the merger of the DIC(K) with the Congress. These were documented in the form of a memorandum of understanding. As per this, the Congress would facilitate the merger. "The same thing happened in 1981-82 when the supporters of Mr. Antony made a homecoming," he observed. He said that the alliance with the DIC(K) was a political compulsion in the larger interests of the Congress, UDF and the DIC(K). Mr. Moily called on the veteran DIC(K) leader K. Karunakaran, the Congress Working Committee member A. K. Antony and Archbishop Susaipakiam and Archbishop Cyril Mar Baselios. Mr. Moily will begin his electioneering campaign in the State from Alapuzha.
