NEW DELHI: Three illegal Bangladesh migrants allegedly involved in several cases of burglary reported from various parts of the Capital in the past three months have been arrested by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police. The police claim to have recovered stolen diamond jewellery worth Rs. 12 lakhs and Rs. 52,000 in cash from them. A Special Staff team under the supervision of Inspector Rajender Singh, arrested the three -- Iliyas, Jamal and his son, Abbas -- from Sunlight Colony in South Delhi on Friday. Police also claim to have recovered narcotic substances and housebreaking implements from the hideouts of the accused. During interrogation, the accused `confessed' to their involvement in 21 cases of burglary in various areas such as Kirti Nagar, Punjabi Bagh, Karol Bagh, Srinivaspuri and Lajpat Nagar since December 2005. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Anil Shukla said Iliyas had been arrested several times. "He has been in jail for a total of seven years. Last, he was released in December," the official said, adding that only three days ago, Iliyas had committed burglary in the house of a Kirti Nagar businessman and escaped with cash and jewellery. One of his accomplices, Khaliq, had been arrested a week ago. Iliyas allegedly told the police that he had managed to escape from police custody at least four times by outsmarting the policemen escorting him. His accomplice, Jamal, worked as a receiver of stolen property and was also involved in drug trafficking. He doubled up as an agent for Iliyas and helped him send the stolen property to his native place in Bangladesh. Earlier, Jamal had been working as a "munshi" of an advocate in Tis Hazari courts but he left the job. He had even stood surety for some of his accomplices even after quitting the job. Abbas had been an active member of Iliyas' gang for long. He worked with other criminals who were in touch with his father. The gang followed the familiar modus operandi of carrying out reconnaissance of the target during the day and then committing the burglary past midnight. They would reach near the target, pulling along a handcart, and gather outside a furniture shop or a temple posing as handcart pullers. In the night, they used to enter the house through the bathroom window by cutting the wire mesh. From the bathroom, they used to enter the main bedroom. After collecting cash and jewellery, the gang would wait till morning to escape from the main door to avoid any suspicion.
