College teachers to launch protest from May 16

Staff Correspondent

`Union Government has failed to implement decision taken in this regard'

Demands
  • Chalking out of a career advancement scheme
  • Restoration of professorship in all colleges under CAS

MYSORE: The All-India Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation has threatened to launch an indefinite protest in front of Parliament House in New Delhi from May 16.

At a press conference convened soon after the national executive committee meeting of the organisation here on Saturday, V.K. Tewari, its general secretary, denounced the "failure" of the Union Government in implementing the decisions approved by the Human Resource Development Ministry with regard to their demands.

University and college teachers from across the country would congregate in New Delhi and hold a relay protest in front of Jantar Mantar from May 15, he said.

The organisation's demands include restoration of complete parity for librarians and DPEs, career advancement scheme (CAS), restoration of professorship in all colleges under CAS according to the 1998 Cabinet decision, a third promotion to end stagnation of senior lecturers in selection grade and readers, and pay scale for coaches.

Dr. Tewari said the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Arjun Singh, had assured in July last to address the demands through a Cabinet note.

But although the issue had come up for consideration during the Cabinet meeting on March 23, it was "unjustifiably referred" to a Committee of Secretaries, he said.

    Campaign

The federation will organise a campaign against the "harmful" effects of the national commission's observations, he said.

The organisation has supported the reservation policy of the Government in all educational institutions. It resolved to call upon the Union Government to implement it in educational institutions in accordance with the Bill enacted by Parliament.
