dated April 10, 1956: Bandaranaike optimistic

Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, leader of the victorious Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, who is now sure of being called upon by the Governor-General to form a Government, clarified in an interview the policy and programme he would pursue. Referring to the Indo-Ceylon problem and the hopes entertained in Indian circles that he would make a new approach, Mr. Bandaranaike said in the context of his friendship with Mr. Nehru and the general agreement between them on major issues it should be easier to find a solution satisfactory both to Ceylon and India. Asked whether he would open talks with Mr. Nehru on the subject, he said, "Naturally." He said he was happy that the Indian reaction was very much in favour of his party coming to power. "I am a friend of Mr. Nehru and our regard for each other is mutual." He recalled Mr. Nehru's visit to his area in 1931, when he first visited Ceylon.
