KOZHIKODE: About 2.66 lakh children in the district were administered pulse polio drops as part of the National Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme on Sunday. District Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Officer A. Baburaj said that more than 90 per cent of the children below the age of five were covered under the programme. Data from a few booths are yet to arrive, he said. The next pulse polio immunisation programme is on May 21. Of these, majority of the children - 2,15,655 children - were in the rural areas of the district. A total of 2,124 booths had been set up for the purpose, of which 406 booths were in urban areas and the rest in rural areas. A trained team of 4,248 volunteers had been pressed into service for the programme. Also, 425 supervisors supervised the whole programme in the district. Booths had been set up at railway stations, bus stands, check posts and other places. A total of 80 mobile booths had been set up specially targeting the children of nomads. The Department of Local Self-Government, the Social Welfare Department and NGOs participated in the pulse polio programme. Rotary International, Kudumbasree, Nehru Yuva Kendra and other NGOs also supported the programme in the district.
