Guwahati: Miscreants attacked the convoy of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) chief Brindaban Goswami in his home town, Tezpur. Though security personnel saved Mr. Goswami from the attackers, other vehicles in the convoy were badly damaged. AGP general secretary Hitendra Nath Goswami alleged that assaulters threw stones and smashed the glass panes of two escort vehicles. The incident occurred at 5:10 p.m. when Mr. Goswami was on his way to a party worker's residence at Panchmile area in Tezpur. A mob armed with lathis waylaid the convoy and pelted stones at the cars. The AGP general secretary claimed the attack was carried out at the Congress' behest to stall polling in Tezpur constituency from where Mr. Goswami is seeking re-election. Polling is scheduled for Monday, along with 60 other constituencies in the second and final phase. He told The Hindu that the attack on Mr. Goswami was preceded by an attack on four AGP workers late on Saturday night, allegedly by Congress workers in Tezpur constituency. Two AGP cadre sustained serious injuries and were shifted to Guwahati for treatment, he added.
