Pulse polio campaign evokes good response

Over 60,000 children immunised in the Nilgiris

Udhagamandalam: The first round of Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme for 2006 evoked good response in various parts of the Nilgiris on Sunday.

Official sources said that 770 immunisation posts including 48 in the Udhagamandalam municipality and 27 within Coonoor municipal limits were set up to administer polio drops to 61,348 children below five years in the district.

Camps at tourist spots

In addition, camps were organised near popular tourist spots such as the Government Botanical Garden and the Ooty Lake to give drops to about 4,000 children of the visitors. Booths were set up at primary health centres, schools and community halls for the convenience of the people residing near forests and in remote areas.

The services of 3,120 persons including staff of the Health Department, anganwadi workers, teachers and members of voluntary organisations were engaged to implement the programme successfully. Among them were members of Rotary and Rotaract Clubs and about 190 volunteers of the Junior Red Cross.

The flow of parents with their children to many of the booths was steady from early in the morning, the sources said. The details regarding the total number of children to have benefited from the campaign would be known on Monday.

Vehicles

With about 100 vehicles being pressed into service, the campaign was inaugurated at the primary health centre in Stone House hill here by the District Revenue Officer, C. Rajkumar.

Among those present were the Deputy Director of Health, Meera, the president, Rotary Club of the Nilgiris West, Matthew Roby Uthup, the Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, Jayakumar and the Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, L. Moorthy.
