This Day That Age
Children of Hubli entertained Prime Minister Nehru to a very interesting programme of mass drill and folk dance on April 9. Five thousand little boys and girls in blue and white uniform impressed the Prime Minister with what he later called one of the "most interesting, disciplined and orderly mass drills and dances." The boys and girls gave a display of drill, dumbbells, sword dance and folk dance. The Prime Minister, who was in a very happy mood, told the children that when he saw their faces he felt he was "looking at the face of the future India. India belongs to the children, they are the future generation of India and it is they who will lead the country to the pinnacle of glory." Smartly uniformed boys gave the Prime Minister a guard of honour. Mr. Nehru's inexpressible joy at meeting and mixing with children was in evidence when he suddenly climbed down from the 15-foot rostrum from where he was watching the rally to be in their midst. Security men looked perplexed when the Prime Minister, pushing them aside, jumped out of a bamboo railing and entered the arena of the rally. He then climbed the bamboo railing and, balancing himself on a pole, took the salute at the march past. When it was over, he came down the rostrum as quickly as he had ascended it, to the great relief of the guards.
