News Analysis
A reader from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (reading The Hindu's online edition), and a reader from Bangalore have both pointed out that the reference to the state-of-the art U.S. made SSBN Typhoon-class nuclear submarine is incorrect (Newscape, "These birds go by celestial navigation", April 10, 2006). It is built by Russia. In "Low turnout on first day of poll" (International, April 10, 2006), Vaiju Naravane, reporting on the Italian elections, spoke to a voter, Romano and his wife Vittoria. "Mum is the word. It's secret," Romano said. In editing, this was attributed to Prodi, the main challenger to Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Mr. Prodi's first name happens to be Romano. In connection with "IAF to retire last of secret planes" (April 7, 2006), Sandeep Dikshit clarifies: The Indian Air Force has decided to house one MiG-25 at the Air Force Museum at Palam, Delhi, and another at the Air Force Academy at Dundigul, Andhra Pradesh. Bangalore has a training command and not an Air Force Academy. It is possible to station one of the aircraft there, but no decision has been taken so far, according to the Assistant Chief of Air Staff at the Air Headquarters, S. Mukherjee. Eight MiG-25 planes arrived in 1981. One crashed while on a ferry flight by a Russian pilot. Two more crashed in 1994 and 2002. The fate of the fourth plane is not known. That leaves only four in the IAF inventory at present. The sentence said: "The Delhi police have registered a case of attempt to suicide against Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar, who is continuing her fast at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here" ("Briefly Case Against Medha", April 8, 2006, page 1). A reader says, "Suicide is not a verb, so who is she going `to suicide' (sic)?" And, Medha Patkar's dharna site was at the Jantar Mantar, and not the Janata Mantar, as the text said in "I will also file a case: Medha" (Mangalore, April 9, 2006, page 1). Under "Briefly Envoy reprimanded" (April 7, 2006, page 1), Mr. C.M. Bhandari should have been referred to as the Indian Ambassador to the UAE, and not the United Arab Emirates Ambassador, as the PTI report said. In "Mine of wealth at official's house" (April 7, 2006), the report said the Lok Ayukta police unearthed wealth of a total value of Rs.10 crore, allegedly amassed by a Karnataka State Government official. The caption for the accompanying photograph said the police recovered silver and gold articles worth Rs.10 crore. A reader points according to the break-up given in the report, the value of the movable assets seized would be Rs.1.3 crore. There is a mix-up of tenses in "ED notice to Natwar likely" (April 8, 2006, page 1). A sentence read: "The notice will be issued after the Directorate stumbled upon a letter, said to have been written by Mr. Natwar Singh to the former Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister, Tariq Aziz." A reader says it should either be: "The notice is likely to be issued as the Directorate stumbled upon a letter ... " or "The notice will be issued as the Directorate stumbled upon a letter ... " It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
