THENI : Using caravan of cars has become popular among candidates and political parties, particularly in Democratic Progressive Alliance, who take on "powerful" AIADMK in their bastion. Congress candidate for Theni constituency N.R.T. Rajkumar (first time contestant) kicked off his election campaign in Theni town on Sunday. His campaign convoy, comprising hundreds of cars and vans, started at Annanji Vilakku and reached Theni. After garlanding the Nehru statue near the bus stand, Mr Rajkumar, along with partymen, toured Aranmanaipudhur, Bommaigoundenpatti, Koduvilarpatti, Nagalapuram, Odaipatti, Seelayampatti, Kottur and Veerapandi. "Flashy and glitzy campaign is indispensable to face powerful rivals," said the partymen. To draw the attention of the people in urban areas and to attract people in rural areas, DMK candidate for Andipatti constituency R. Seeman and his followers too drove a cavalcade of cars in Andipatti recently. The car procession that started from Andipatti went up to the Varushanadu hill, extreme corner of the constituency. Periakulam MP J.M. Haroon and his supporters, while launching his election campaign in Periakulam constituency for 2004 Parliamentary elections, travelled in hundreds of cars up to the district border from Genguwarpatti in Periakulam union. The police filed cases against Mr. Haroon for poll code violations.
