KURNOOL: Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu has said that a national alternative with regional parties as its constituents is on the cards as the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government has failed the country on various fronts.

Talking to reporters here on Monday, he said unmindful of its 146 strength in the House of 540, the Congress initiated sweeping changes in the foreign policy, which would hurt Muslims in the country.

Saying that the Government had taken harsh stand under pressure from the US, Mr. Naidu said a large country like India should reserve its freedom. On relationship with the Left parties, Mr. Naidu explained that Congress had alliance with them. The CPI (M) had love-hate relationship with the ruling party but the TDP and the CPI (M) fought together on Gangavaram port issue.

However, he said there was no formal alliance with the Left. He found fault with the BJP joining hands with the Congress on Iran issue and asked whether there was a need for `rath yatra' by L.K. Advani when the country was struggling to ensure basic needs to its population.

Mr. Naidu said the zooming Sensex and reduction in the prices of cars was no yardstick of development but reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel would be welcome.

On the functioning of bureaucracy in the State, Mr. Naidu alleged that that some officers worked hand in glove with the ruling party leaders.

The thin line between a political functionary and official position vanished for some while others compromised to save the position. On the other hand, honest officers were sidelined, he said.
