APPEALING TO VOTERS: MDMK general secretary Vaiko addressing an election campaign at Pudukottai on Monday. Photo: M.Moorthy
PUDUKOTTAI: Continuing his election campaign, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko on Monday claimed that there was a wave in favour of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Campaigning at Pudukottai Town in support of the AIADMK candidate R. Nedunchezhiyan contesting in Pudukottai Assembly constituency, Mr. Vaiko said the welfare schemes such as the Uzhavar Padugappu Thittam, free text books and free cycle schemes launched by the ruling AIADMK government went well with the masses. Further, the State did not witness any caste-related violence and a peaceful atmosphere prevailed during the AIADMK rule. The people had come to realise this aspect, he said. The AIADMK government acted speedily when the tsunami struck and later when the state was battered by floods by distributing assistance and relief to the affected people. The public accorded a huge reception wherever the Chief Minister went, he said while claiming that there was a wave in favour of the AIADMK at present. The AIADMK-led combine would obtain over 200 seats in the ensuing assembly elections, he further claimed. Criticising the DMK, he said the public would not get fooled by its promises including free distribution of colour TV sets and supply of one kilogram rice for Rs.2. Though being part of the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre, the DMK had not taken any steps to reduce the price of rice, he alleged. People were aware of these aspects and have already taken a decision, he said. Mr. Vaiko also campaigned at Adhanakottai and Gandarvakottai seeking support for the AIADMK candidates contesting in the five Assembly segments in the district.

Addressing an election meeting at Urnipuram in Thiruvonam Assembly segment, Mr.Vaiko said that his party has been consistently fighting for the state's rights on Cauvery water. Mr Vaiko said that he undertook a padayatra over the Cauvery issue from Poompuhar to Grand Anaicut. The DMK, he alleged, had betrayed the people on the issue. "I can cite various instances," he said. The DMK which was not so interested on the issue, acted swiftly to stall the cable tv act, he alleged. He said that MDMK wrote to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the flood relief issue. It also urged the Prime Minister to give compensation sought by the Tamil Nadu Government for the agricultural losses suffered in the flood. When tsunami struck, MDMK party gave Rs 10 lakh as donation for the Chief Minister's relief fund. He sought the support of the people for K.Thangamuthu, AIADMK candidate for Thiruvonam constituency. In the evening he addressed a meeting at Thilakar Thidal in which all the eight candidates of AIADMK contesting from the eight constituencies in the district attended. He later addressed a meeting at Pattukottai seeking the people's support for Viswanathan, MDMK candidate.
