CHENNAI: Carnatic vocalists Shanmukhapriya and Haripriya, popularly known as the `Priya sisters', were presented with the `Vocational Excellence Award' by the Rotary Club of Madras, Mylapore, here on Sunday. The event began with a concert by the duo. The felicitation function was organised after the main piece `Karthikeya Gangeya' in Ragam Todi. Former Chief Election Commissioner T.N. Seshan said that by honouring the Priya sisters, members of the Rotary Club of Madras, Mylapore, honoured themselves. He congratulated the vocalists and asked them to bring more fame to the country. Mr. Seshan also lauded the Rotary Club for their service to society. District Governor R. Shyamsundar said, "Good music relieves stress and children exposed to good music will stay away from violence, terrorism and crime." The Rotary Club of Madras, Mylapore, started 18 years ago, has been honouring several persons excelling in their professions. President of the club N.S. Saravanan said the sisters were chosen for their significant contribution to music. He said the duo, besides being accomplished musicians, were trained Bharatanatyam dancers. Ms. Haripriya played for the Tamil Nadu women's cricket team. The sisters received their initial training from their father and then learnt from noted vocalists Radha and Jayalakshmi. They are currently under the tutelage of senior musician T.R. Subramaniam. Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetty said he was very happy to be part of the function. Haripriya said they felt very honoured to receive the award. "It will motivate us to work harder and perform better," she said.
