HITTING THE ROAD: DMK president M. Karunanidhi campaigning in Chintadripet on Monday. Photo: S. Thanthoni
CHENNAI: The celebrations began in Nedunchezhian Nagar much ahead of the arrival of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M.Karunanidhi for campaigning: parodies of Rajnikant's film music blaring from loud speakers all over seeking votes; old and young supporters dancing, egged on by local party leaders and children running aimlessly holding placards carrying the DMK symbol. When Mr.Karunanidhi arrived in his Tata Safari with his family and a few party leaders, the decibel level increased manifold: crackers were burst and a band started playing music. Pushing back the crowd that tried to get close to him, Union Ministers T.R.Baalu, Dayanidhi Maran; party leaders M.K.Stalin, Arcot N. Veerasamy and J.Anbazhagan guided Mr.Karunanidhi into an open Gypsy jeep. He stood for a while, greeting those who had arrived. A short while later, Mr.Stalin took leave. "I have a campaign meeting at Ponneri," he said. As the motorcade moved, the supporters too moved. While Mr.Stalin ensured that his brother Tamilarasu got on to Mr. Karunanidhi's campaign vehicle, M.K. Selvi was engrossed in talking to people along the route. About an hour into the campaign, Mr.Karunanidhi explained the welfare measures the DMK government undertook from 1996 to 2001 and told people that the DMK had kept all promises it made. "We only make promises we can keep."
