GULBARGA (KARNATAKA): Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative Shami Ahmed Shah, who was arrested on March 30 at the Gulbarga railway station, was remanded on Monday to police custody for 10 more days by Principal Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) V.B. Joshi. Shah, who was first remanded to police custody for 10 days on March 31, was on Monday produced in the court at the end of the custody period. The prosecution urged the court to extend the remand order by another 15 days to enable the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to complete investigation. The magistrate, who initially refused to concede the demand saying that the court had no powers to extend custody beyond a maximum period of 15 days, said the accused could be kept in custody for another four days at the most. However, the prosecution, quoting Supreme Court judgments, said the JMFC could extend custody under special circumstances and in cases of national interest.
The magistrate enquired with the accused whether he was ill-treated or subjected to third degree methods. A pensive-looking Shah replied in the negative.
The Mumbai Police have secured a body warrant from a Mumbai court for the custody of Shah for questioning about his possible role in LeT activities in Maharashtra.
A team of the Andhra Pradesh police visited Gulbarga on Sunday and interrogated Shah.
