EXPRESSING IRE: BJP corporators and leaders burning copies of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) budget for 2006-07 in front of the BMP head office in Bangalore on Monday. Photo: K. Gopinathan
BANGALORE: Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) on Monday demanded that the ruling Congress in the civic body withdraw the budget for 2006-2007 presented recently and present a realistic estimate to the State Government for approval. The members, who staged a protest in front of the BMP head office, burnt copies of the budget book and said the budget was prepared only "for the benefit of Congress corporators." "It is neither an election-budget nor a development-oriented pro-poor budget. It has been chalked out only for individual benefit of the corporators belonging to the Congress," the BJP members alleged. They accused the ruling Congress in the civic body of manipulating revenue estimates to present a rosy picture of the civic body's finances in the budget. At a time when the civic body was unable to clear pending bills of contractors to the tune of Rs. 500 crore, it was ridiculous that the Mayor's discretionary quota has been increased to Rs. 25 crore, the members added.
