Body with burns found

TIRUCHI : The body of an unidentified youth aged about 35 was found with burns near the graveyard at Punganur on Monday.

The police suspect it to be a case of murder.

The Somarasampettai police have recovered the body, following a complaint lodged by the Village Administrative Officer, Rangarajan.

Plan to boycott Assembly elections

The Tiruchi Karumandapam Exnora has planned to boycott the forthcoming Assembly election, protesting against the `failure' of the administration in implementing flood prevention schemes in and around Karumandapam.

In a statement issued here on Monday, its president G. Subramanian said hundreds of families were affected in the October-November floods last year. No concrete flood prevention scheme had been planned and executed in areas like Selvanagar, despite oft-repeated pleas, he said.

Plea to curb rash driving

The Tamil Nadu Consumer Federation has urged the police to take effective steps to check rash driving of city buses, unlicensed fish-carts etc.

In a release issued here on Monday, the general secretary of the Federation, M. Sekaran, said that the police, instead of checking the city buses and fish carts, are booking offences pertaining only to two-wheeler riders, particularly moped-riders, a majority of whom belonged to economically weaker sections, in the guise of some violation or other. This caused much hardship to the weaker sections.

``Enact Women's Reservation Bill''

The LEAD, a non-governmental organisation, has urged the Centre to take immediate steps for the enactment of Women's Reservation Bill immediately.

A resolution adopted at a function to mark the International Women's Day celebrations here recently condemned atrocities perpetrated on women at work-places etc. It also expressed serious concern over the continued female infanticide and called upon the Government to put an end to this heinous crime. The level in the Mettur dam stood at 112.46 feet on Monday. The inflow was 1,329 cusecs and the outflow 2,417 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.
