Hubli-Dharwad
Staff Correspondent
HUBLI: Mahaveer Jayanti was celebrated with religious fervour in the twin cities and various parts of the district. Several religious and cultural programmes marked the occasion. Idols of Bhagawan Mahaveer were taken out in processions at several places where Jains are in a majority. In the twin cities, Jains, particularly women and children, participated in the processions in large numbers. In Hubli, puja was performed to an idol of Bhagawan Mahaveer at the Shantinath Jain Mandir after which it was carried in a "palaki" in a procession. The procession led by Jain sadhvis passed through the thoroughfares of the city before culminating at the starting point. In Dharwad, similar processions were taken out. While Shwetambar Jains took out a procession in the morning, it was the turn of Digambar Jains to do so in the evening.
Tricycles donated
Members of the All India Jain Youth Federation celebrated Mahaveer Jayanti by donating tricycles to three disabled children at a colourful function held at Durgad Bail in Hubli under the aegis of Sanskriti Jain Pariwar. Pralhad Joshi, MP, unveiled a portrait of Bhagawan Mahaveer. Mahendra Singhi, founder-president of the youth federation, and others were present. Discourses were held in the evening. Many Jains distributed sweets and fruits in hospitals in the twin cities.
