KOCHI: Maharaja Swati Tirunal of the royal family of erstwhile Travancore is known to have made immense contribution to the development of classical music and dance in the State. He was also an efficient and able administrator. Many administrative reforms with far-reaching implications were carried out during his rule. The Swati Tirunal Academy of Music in Thiruvananthapuram was established over 60 years ago and functions as a prime centre for music education in the State. Kochi will also soon have its own memorial for the king of music. A statue of Swati Tirunal will be unveiled in front of the Kerala Fine Arts Hall on Sunday evening. Brigadier R.B. Nair, who donated the statue, has been an ardent fan of Swati Tirunal. He has written a couple of articles in leading journals highlighting the contributions of the maestro towards popularising Carnatic music in the State. It was Mr. Nair who mooted the idea of a statue of Swati Tirunal in Kochi. The Kerala Fine Arts Society extended cooperation to the project by offering to install the statue on its premises. The statue is made by sculptor Avin Thattassery.
