dated April 12, 1956: Vijayawada-Guntur BG line

Work in connection with conversion of the Guntur-Vijayawada-Masulipatnam metre gauge line into broad gauge would be taken up this year, said Mr. K.B. Mathur, Member, Transportation, Railway Board, in Madras on April 10. The doubling of the line in the Jolarpet-Arkonam section would be done over a distance of 30 miles this year. Similarly, on the Vijayawada-Gudur section, doubling of the line would be done over a distance of about 35 miles. The present intention was not to sanction the whole scheme, but to take up for execution some portions every year. The Railway Board was considering certain proposals for affording additional facilities for the free flow of iron ore and manganese ore traffic. Mr. Mathur said the Vijayawada yard was being remodelled and the second phase of the work was now in progress. Proposals had been drawn up to double the line from Tenali right up to Gudur. Asked when work on the Kancheepuram-Vellore rail project might be expected to commence, Mr. Mathur said new rail links were not likely to be taken up for another two or three years.
