Amanpreet Singh clinches gold

Jalandhar: Amanpreet Singh registered a hard-earned victory over Vivek Singh to clinch the gold in the 10m pistol (ISSF) for men in the fourth Sardar Sajjan Singh Sethi Memorial Masters shooting championship at the PAP shooting range here on Tuesday.

Amanpreet, representing Indian Airlines, clinched the top position via the tie-breaker after he tied with his teammate Vivek with an identical total of 574 points out of a possible 600. Amanpreet, a product of Punjab Police Academy (Phillaur), shot 96, 96, 97, 98, 93 and 94 to total 574, while Vivek's progressive scores were 95, 96, 98, 98, 94 and 93. Umesh Chandra of Indo-Tibetan Border Police was third with a net score of 573 (91, 95, 98, 99, 98, 92).

Jaspal Rana of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation with a total of 568 points (95, 94, 96, 93, 96, 94) could not gain the podium placing. Melbourne Commonwealth Games best athlete Samaresh Jung of Central Industrial Security Force and Zakir Khan of Indian Airlines did not compete. Meanwhile two-time Olympians Anjali Bhagwat and Suma Shirur arrived here on Tuesday and had a feel of the shooting range on the eve of their 10 metres air rifle competition.

Talking about the Doha Asian Games later this year, Anjali said ``it will be a different cup of tea. All top Asian shooters will be seen in action. The standard of Asian countries is very high. Especially Chinese shooters are tough and talented. Our aim is to win medals in the Asian Games.''
