Letters to the Editor
Now that the Government has given in to the pension demand of the SBI staff, we can expect every union in every sector to capitalise on its monopolistic strength to harass the people. The SBI strike has hurt many families, government employees and pensioners, while the staff started it after collecting their salaries. Over the years, depositors have been getting lesser rates of interest, while the rewards of employees have been revised upwards frequently. Obviously, the depositors cannot go on indefinite strikes.
Margaswamy Arthanari,
The people have been held to ransom by both the SBI employees and the Government. That the Government agreed to the revision of pension after one week of strike shows its callous attitude to roadblocks that have the potential to paralyse the economy. The attitude of the bank unions is equally condemnable. The Government and the unions owe an apology to the nation in general for the losses they caused to the economy and in particular to the customers, who are supposed to be the bank's benefactors.
At the end of the strike, the secretary of the All-India SBI Staff Federation is reported to have said all pending work would be cleared so that customers were not inconvenienced (April 10). How helpful! As one affected by the strike, I wish all the employees who participated in the strike are paid their next salary late by the number of days they went on strike and are also denied the use of ATMs.
B. Lakshminarayanan,
