News Analysis
Noam Chomsky a Nobel Prize winner? He has been incorrectly referred to as a Nobel Laureate in "U.K. journal sparks trans-Atlantic spat" (Op-Ed, April 11, 2006). "A shy lad, the 19-year-old Raina has a steady shoulder on his head," was the sentence in the last paragraph of "Suresh Raina India's rising star" (Sport, April 11, 2006). A reader points out that it is an anatomical impossibility! How can Ollanta Humala be referred to as an army leader, asks a reader (International, "Globescan Peru poll goes into run-off", April 11, 2006). The sentence referred to the former Peruvian lieutenant colonel, who leads among the three contestants for presidency. The reader says only a general or a field marshal can be termed a leader. A reader objects to the heading of the report "Clean chit given to Navin Chawla" (April 8, 2006, page 1), pointing out that it does not say that the Election Commissioner, Mr. Navin Chawla, has been absolved. But the report also says the Attorney General Milon K. Banerjee is "understood" to have given a clean chit to Mr. Chawla. The report relies on the opinion given by the AG who has clarified the constitutional provision that an Election Commissioner can be removed from office only for acts of misconduct during his holding of the office of EC.
