Tamil New Year to glitter with craft works

Madurai: From bronze icon to brass lamps, from Tanjore art plates to gem and jewellery collections, an array of craft works on discount prices will be on display at the Tamil New Year special offer exhibition and sales at the Poompuhar showroom from April 13 to 23.

Organised by the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation (TNHDC), the exhibition will host a variety of handicrafts from different parts of the country apart from products from six production units in Tamil Nadu.

Traditional brass lamps, church bells, puja and temple bells are produced at Natchiar Koil unit near Kumbakonam.

Bronze statues are being made at Swamimalai.

Shields, bronze plates with copper and silver artwork and ornamental pots are made at Thanjavur. Brass lamps are produced at Madurai and Vagaikulam (Ambasamudram).

Sandalwood figurines and wood carving works are done at Kallakurichi and stone sculptures at Mahabalipuram.

The New Year sale will be on in all the 16 showrooms of Poompuhar, including those in New Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore.

The TNHDC has made special arrangements to market handicrafts and individual artisans and societies of craftsmen have been provided space in the showrooms to market their products.

A special counter has been earmarked exclusively for textiles, gem and jewellery varieties, according to V. Ganesan, Manager, Poompuhar, Madurai.

Discount offer

The discount offer ranges from 10 to 40 per cent. Poompuhar has fixed a sales target of Rs.6 lakh for the exhibition.

Products are available at a cost ranging from Rs.10 to Rs.29,000. The exhibition is open on Sundays during the period, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
