DMK takes on AIADMK in eight constituencies

Congress pitted against AIADMK in seven seats

Pondicherry: It is for the first time after 26 years the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have come together and formed an alliance to fight an Assembly poll in the Union Territory.

These parties were partners of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) in the last Lok Sabha poll held in 2004. Even while being an ally of the Congress in the DPA, the DMK was the main Opposition in the Territorial Assembly.

While the Congress is contesting 16 seats as per an agreement entered into with the DMK, the DMK has been allotted 11 seats. The Communist Party of India and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (the other allies in the DPA) have been earmarked one and two seats respectively.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam heading the People's Democratic Alliance with the Puduchery Munnetra Congress (PMC), the Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) allies.

The sixteen seats allotted to the Congress are spread over in Pondicherry (9), Karaikal (4), Mahe (2) and Yanam (one).

The Congress clashes with the PMC in five constituencies (four in Pondicherry and one in Karaikal).

The DMK is locking horns with the AIADMK in 8 constituencies (six in Pondicherry and two in Karaikal). It is pitted against the PMC in three constituencies (all are in Pondicherry region).

Congress candidates

The Congress takes on the AIADMK in seven constituencies as per the list released (three in Pondicherry and one each in Karaikal, Mahe, Palloor and Yanam constituencies).

The DPI and the MDMK are allotted two seats each in the AIADMK-led front and these parties face challenge in the segments earmarked to them from the Congress.
