Khandre nominates office-bearers

Bangalore: All-India Veerashaiva Mahasabha president Bheemanna Khandre has nominated 16 mahasabha office-bearers, 12 of whom will be vice-presidents.

Those nominated are Vishwanatha Reddy Mudnal, former Minister; Shamanur Shivashankarappa, MLA; Prabhakar Kore, MLC; Veeranna Charantimath, MLA; S.B. Muddappa, former Chief Secretary; N. Thippanna, former State JD(S) president; Chandrakanth Gurappa Bellad, former MLA; Aravind Jatti; S.S. Patil, MLA and former Minister; Rani Satish, former Minister; Lalitha Havagirao Pandhare and Linganagowda Malhar Karaddi (all vice-presidents); B.S. Muddappa (Treasurer); A.S. Rs. 50 lakh granted for research projects

BELLARY: The University Grants Commission has approved as many as ten research projects proposed by Kannada University, Hampi, and sanctioned a grant of Rs. 50 lakh for them. Perhaps Kannada University is the only university in the State to get such a huge grant for research works, according to Karigowda Beechanahalli, Registrar of the university.

Ullal MLA urged to resign

MANGALORE: The former Ullal MLA K. Jayaram Shetty has called on U.T. Fareed, present MLA, to resign his seat in the Legislative Assembly and pave the way for fresh elections.

Addressing a protest rally of Janata Dal (Secular) workers here on Monday, he said Mr. Fareed had been in poor health for past three years. This was preventing him from discharging his duties.

Noting that Mr. Fareed had not been able to attend Assembly sessions regularly or even tour the constituency, Mr. Shetty said development works had come to a standstill in Ullal. Mr. Shetty said it would be in the interests of the people of the constituency for Mr. Fareed to resign. — Staff Correspondent

Three men arrested

TUMKUR: The police on Tuesday arrested three persons in two cases of women being doused with kerosene and set ablaze. Rangamma, 40, who was admitted to the General Hospital here with 80 per cent burns, died on Monday night. Venkatalakshmamma, with 60 per cent burns, is under intensive care in the same hospital.

The police said Rangamma received money from an insurance company after her husband, Shivanna died a few months ago. Shivanna's brother, Manjunath, and his cousin Siddaraju allegedly poured kerosene on Rangamma and set her on fire on Sunday night when she refused to give them the money. The two have been arrested.

Venkatalakshmamma, a widow, was living alone at Gatlahalli. Fakruddhin Ali, said to be a friend of hers, allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire on Monday night. He has been arrested. — Staff Correspondent

Global business leadership course

Bangalore: Satyam School of Leadership (SSL) of Satyam Computer Services on Tuesday announced its partnership with Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP) and Universitas 21 (U21) Global, a consortium of 18 overseas universities to launch an integrated curriculum on Global Business Leadership for the senior executives of Satyam.

According to Girish Rangan, country manager, U21 Global, the programme will enhance the business strategy skills of Satyam executives. HBSP will deliver leadership content, case studies and online leadership modules, while U21 Global will deliver additional content and look after participant management and assessment processes.

Two panchayat secretaries suspended

HASSAN: Secretaries of Nerlige and Ganjigere gram panchayats in Arsikere and Alur taluks have been suspended for their alleged dereliction of duty and embezzlement of funds, according to Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayat F.R. Jamadar. In a press release here, he said he had received complaints against the officials and both of them were absent when he made a surprise visit to the villages. On verifying records, it was found that the two have misused funds. — Staff Correspondent

Loans disbursed

HASSAN: Hassan District Cooperative Central Bank (HDCCB) president Patel Shivaram has disbursed loans of Rs. 37 lakh under SGSY scheme for 20 elf-help groups of Hassan, Channarayapatna, Belur, Holenarsipur, Arsikere and Sakleshpur on Monday. Distributing cheques to SHGS, he said they should take up sheep raring, which was said to be a profitable venture in the district. Mr. Shivaram urged the leaders of SHGs to create awareness among farmers to enrol themselves to Yashswini Health Scheme of the Government. — Staff Correspondent

Teak wood seized

SIRSI: Forest Department officials seized teak wood worth Rs. 80,000 at the Atabail forest area in Mundgod taluk on Monday.

A search is on to arrest those who were trying to smuggle the wood out of the forest, the police said. — Correspondent

HUBLI: Gajanan Mahamandal has appealed to the General Manager of the South Western Railway to regularise the services of 187 casual labourers who have been removed from service. Referring to the letters written by MPs Manjunath Kunnur and Pralhad Joshi, he appealed to the General Manager to look into the issue . — Staff Correspondent
