Financier's threat: two end lives

Staff Reporter

  • The micro-financier had allegedly humiliated the carpenter's family for not repaying the loan
  • The family decided to commit suicide, but were dissuaded by a relative
  • But two younger members refused to heed and consumed poison

NELLORE: Two members of a carpenter family committed suicide here on Tuesday due to alleged harassment by a micro financier. According to the police, Aparanajani, the wife of Bhavani Subrahmanyam Achari, of Santhapet here had taken a loan of Rs 30,000 from a micro financier Katari Sunita in 2004. As per the agreement, she was to pay Rs 3,000 per week to clear the loan.

However, the micro financier came to their home on Monday and allegedly harassed Aparanjani and her family for not paying the dues, the police said.

Humiliated, the family comprising wife, husband and five children planned to commit suicide on Monday evening by consuming poison. But the husband of Aparanjani's sister prevented them from doing so. However, not heeding his advice, younger members of the family B Balakrishna (24) and B Manjula (20) committed suicide by consuming poison in the early hours of Tuesday.

It may be recalled that micro financiers reportedly harassed a family in Kotamitta area in the past too. They allegedly abducted a pregnant lady and an old woman demanding repayment of the loan.

The victims eventually paid the amount and were released. In another incident, a child was taken away by the representatives of a finance company in the three-town area for repayment of the loan. But no complaint was lodged in the local police station.

Perturbed over the incident, locals had detained the abductors and handed them over to the police just two days ago.
