Panel to monitor prices

HYDERABAD : A state-level market intervention committee, headed by Civil Supplies Commissioner Bhanwarlal, has been formed to monitor and control the prices of essential commodities in the State.

The committee has two members -- Agriculture Production Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Marketing. It will meet on every Monday and Thursday. Officials of all the departments and agencies concerned are required to attend the meetings. - Special Correspondent

Government's move on quota hailed

HYDERABAD : The All-India Christian Council has hailed the move of the Union Government to provide reservation for OBCs in IITs and IIMs.

In a statement on Monday, the council said this would give substance to the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations empowering OBCs in political arena and in employment. - Special Correspondent

Fatal fall

ADILABAD : L. Suresh Sai (52), a senior supervisory employee of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, was killed on Monday when he fell into a well at a lodge here. He was a native of Mancherial town and is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.

According to the police, he apparently went to the well to draw water and fell into it. - Staff Reporter

Bombs explode at police station; one hurt

ANANTAPUR : A woman was injured at the Chennekothapalli police station in the district on Tuesday as bombs kept in a shelf exploded accidentally, when she was cleaning the office.

According to the police, the woman, Shyamalamma, was sweeping the office when the explosion occurred. She was first given first aid by a local doctor and later moved to the Government Area Hospital at Dharmavaram. The bombs were recovered from a liquor shop a couple of months ago. - Staff Reporter

Advani's tour schedule

HYDERABAD : BJP leader L.K. Advani will address public meetings at Hindupur, Kadiri, Madanapally, Tirupati, Kamareddy, Adilabad besides Hyderabad during his `Bharat suraksha yatra' which enters the State from Bidar on April 15. The meetings will be organised on April 15 (Hindupur), 16 (Kadiri, Madanapally, Tirupati), 18 (Hyderabad) and 19 (Kamareddy, Adilabad).-Special Correspondent

Gurukul entrance test

HYDERABAD : Entrance test for Intermediate (MPC, BBC) course in Andhra Pradesh Girijan Welfare Gurukul institutions will be conducted on April 16 at Parvatipuram, Visakhapatnam, Bhadrachalam, Warangal, Srisailam and Srikalahasti.

According to a release, the objective test will be from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. -Special Correspondent

Three tonsured on witchcraft charge

Sangareddy: Villagers of Kanukunta in Jinnaram mandal allegedly tonsured three persons, including a woman, alleging witchcraft on Tuesday.

According to the police, A. Krishna of the village, who was sick for a prolonged period walked towards the ground where the three -- Ellagoni Lakshminarayana, Nawabpeta Sankaraiah and Nawabpeta Ellamma -- were performing some rituals. The villagers dragged them to the village and tonsured them. - Staff Reporter

Five hurt as Congress, CPI workers clash

KHAMMAM : Five persons were injured as supporters of the Congress and the CPI clashed at Rayigudem village in Pinapaka mandal on Tuesday.

The trouble started as Burgumpadu MLA and CPI leader Payam Venkateswarlu visited the village for laying stone for construction of IAY houses. The Congress supporters wanted involvement of their leader in the programme. - Staff Reporter

Hotelier hacked to death

NANDYAL: G. Ramakrishna, an hotelier, was hacked to death in the early of Tuesday here. According to reports, Ramakrishna had opened his tea stall before going for a morning walk when some unidentified persons swooped on him and hacked him to death. The police pressed into service a dog squad and recovered some weapons used by the assailants. — Staff Reporter

Mahavir Jayanti celebrated

KURNOOL: Mahavir Jayanti was celebrated by Jain community here on Tuesday. A colourful procession was taken out in the city calling for peace and non-violence. The volunteers also emphasised the need for practising vegetarianism. — Staff Reporter

Houses gutted

KADAPA: Seven thatched houses were gutted in Kondappagaripalle village in Chakrayapet mandal on Monday night. Electric short circuit was said to have caused the fire which resulted in an estimated loss of about Rs. 2 lakhs. — Staff Reporter

Death toll up

KADAPA: Death toll in the lorry accident at the pilgrim centre Polathala in Pendlimarry mandal rose to 11 with P. Ramanaiah of Pedda Gopavaram in Badvel mandal succumbing to injuries. The body was handed over to family after post-mortem at Badvel Government hospital on Tuesday. — Staff Reporter
