HASSAN: The Public Works Department (PWD) had spent over Rs. 30 crore for the development of roads in Arkalgud taluk and it had been planned to build a four-lane road in the town limits at a cost of Rs. 1.10 crore, Arkalgud MLA A.T. Ramaswamy has said. Mr. Ramaswamy, who inaugurated the work on the construction of roads in Arkalgud town on Monday, said that efforts would be made for integrated development of the taluk, and work on underground drainage and roads connecting taluk headquarters was fast progressing. It had been planned to build a four-lane road in the town, he said. The Government had sanctioned a fire service unit to the town and Rs. 70 lakh would be spent on constructing a building for the unit. It would start functioning soon and Rs. 15 lakh had been sanctioned for building a crematorium and tenders had been invited for the purpose. It had been decided to sanction sites to the roofless in the taluk and there was a plan to develop 500 sites for the purpose. The Government planned to build a "community centre" in the town, he said. About the controversy related to widening of roads, he said that the work had been taken up in public interest and enough time had been given to the public to vacate their establishments. Executive Engineer of PWD Rame Gowda said Rs. 3 crore had been spent on developing rural roads and Rs. 2.43 crore had been spent on repairing the damaged roads. The department had sanctioned Rs. 40 lakh for building new roads.
