Kozhikode: Restoring peace at the riot-hit Nadapuram in Kozhikode district had been possible because the United Democratic Front (UDF) was in power, Kozhikode DCC president M. Veerankutty said here on Tuesday.

Taking part in the deliberations at a `meet-the-candidates' programme organised by the Press Club here, Mr. Veerankutty, who is contesting on the Congress ticket from Nadapauram, said the UDF Government had taken stringent measures to bring lasting peace to Nadapuram where many people lost their lives in the communal riots in 2001.

He accused the sitting MLA, Binoy Viswom of the CPI, who is seeking re-election from the constituency, of not taking any steps for the development activities in the region.

No sustainable development could be seen at Nadapuram. Thousands of goldsmiths lost their jobs in the last several years.

No measures were taken to boost the sagging agriculture sector especially in promoting coconut and its value-added products, Mr. Veerankutty said.

However, Mr. Viswom countered the argument of the district Congress chief saying that he had worked day and night with the people to restore peace in the trouble-torn areas.

A whopping Rs.85 crores of development activities had been undertaken during the last five years.

Steps had been taken to initiate the construction of seven bridges and nine roads at Nadapuram.

An IHRDE college and three sections offices of the KSEB started functioning in the constituency. Infrastructure facilities were improved at the Nadapuram Government Hospital.

But the shortage of drinking water still remained a problem to be sorted out, Mr. Viswom said.

Mr. Veerankutty said that if at all the CPI leader had done some thing for the constituency it was because the UDF Government had cooperated with the MLA in all his positive endeavours.
