JAIPUR: A month-long "Jal Chetana Yatra" to be launched at all district headquarters in Rajasthan on May 15 will generate awareness among the people about the significance of conservation of water and popularise new techniques of protecting the ground water level and rain water harvesting. The `raths' (chariots) forming part of the yatra will cross as many as 18,000 villages across the State with the message of water conservation. These `raths' will educate the villagers about the issues of water pollution, ground water, agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, cooperative bodies and small scale industries through audio-visual presentations. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, reviewing the preparations for the yatra at a meeting on "Jal Abhiyaan" in the State Secretariat here on Monday, suggested that the entourage make full use of charts, maps, video films and street plays to apprise the villagers of the water-related issues. Ms. Raje said the elected representatives, Divisional Commissioners, the Secretaries in charge of districts and senior officials of the departments concerned would attend the public meetings to be held at the halting points during the yatra. The yatra forms part of the Jal Abhiyaan launched across the State on December 10, 2005. The campaign sponsored by the State Government has also set the target of constructing 1-lakh water harvesting structures by June 30 next.
