Govt. offers help to Meerut fire victims

Gen. Rodrigues expresses grief

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Governor and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, S.F. Rodrigues, on Tuesday expressed grief over the huge loss of life and property in the tragic fire at Meerut on Monday evening.

Expressing his sympathies for the bereaved families, Gen. Rodrigues offered all help in terms of extending medical assistance to the victims in Chandigarh hospitals.

Meanwhile, Gen. Rodrigues asked the senior officials of the Chandigarh Administration and other social, commercial and religious organisations to ensure that all fire-fighting precautions are in place during fairs, festivals and other events organised on different occasions. He emphasised that all fire safety measures provided under the Fire Act must be adhered to meticulously to cover every kind of risk.

He also asked the management of various public service organisations such as schools, hospitals and other public utility services to evolve effective internal mechanisms for fire-fighting. He also asked the district Administration and Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh to identify the work places handling flammable substances and to ensure that they implement an effective safety management system to check the occurrence of any untoward incident.

Fire safety education

Emphasising the need for fire safety education, in collaboration with communities at the local level, Gen. Rodrigues said that all agencies in the public and private sector must also adopt a systematic approach to focus on the prevention of fires and create a multi-disciplinary service to cover every aspect of fire safety, supported by an adequate management structure.
