Salem seeks ban on `Gangster'

Mumbai : Extradited gangster Abu Salem on Monday moved a TADA court seeking a ban on the release of Hindi film `Gangster' produced by Mahesh Bhatt claiming it was based on his life and the movie might portray him in bad light.

Salem filed an application through his lawyer saying an independent agency should review the film slated for release at the end of this week as it might have portrayed him in bad light.

Hearing his plea, designated judge P. D. Kode adjourned the matter to April 12 and asked CBI to file a reply.

Earlier, Salem had sent a legal notice to Bhatt asking him to withdraw the film as it was based on his life and would affect his right to a fair trial.

Bhatt's lawyer Majeed Memon replied to Salem saying the film was not based on Salem's life and was purely a work of fiction. Besides, he said, a statutory warning was also screened before the film proclaiming that it is not based on Salem's story and that it was a work of fiction.

Bhatt's counsel Anant Pai told the TADA court that the opinion of the court was being prejudiced on the basis of some wrong reports that have appeared in the media.

However, the court refused to see the film and adjourned the matter till April 12. PTI
